Version Differences

The Great Ghoul Duel has 2 different versions: one from 2018, and one from 2022. The differences between these versions are listed here.

First Version (2018)

The original version of the Great Ghoul Duel was released for Halloween in 2018. This version was available on the Google home page during October 30 and 31, 2018, and can currently be played on its official page here or in fullscreen here.

Hosted games can still be played in this version, but its public multiplayer servers were shut down in late October 2021, which might be done to work with the 2022 version. To allow players to play again, Google rebooted the game and it can be played here.

The only content in this version that was removed in the 2022 version was Superlatives, titles that could be earned at the end of each match depending on the player's performance.

Second Version (2022)

The thumbnail of the 2022 version.

An updated version of the Great Ghoul Duel was released for Halloween in 2022. (It may have originally been planned to release in 2021, given that it is internally called "halloween21." and might explain the shutdown of the servers in the 2018 version.) This version was available on the Google home page during October 30 and 31, 2022, and can currently be played on its official page here or in fullscreen here.

The 2022 version included a few changes and additions.

• Two new ghouls were added to each team: Moss and Emerald on the Green Team, and Mauve and Amethyst on the Purple Team.
• Two new maps were added: Spooky Corn Maze and Spooky Museum.
• The Magic Pumpkin was added.
• The 2018 version's Superlatives were removed and replaced with a new system, Achievements. These achievements also unlock hats that players can wear.
• The game thumbnail was updated to show off the new ghouls, the Spooky Corn Maze map, and the Magic Pumpkin.
• The "Green Wins!" and "Purple Wins!" screens were updated to include the new ghouls. (The lobby and game starting screens, however, were not updated.)

• The Great Ghoul Duel was originally planned as a sequel to Magic Cat Academy, another Halloween-themed Google Doodle, but was changed to being an original game during development.
